Dhaka: President of Bikolpo Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Tuesday demanded formation of a ‘national government’ together with ‘mature brains’ for the next five years after holding a fair and credible nation election.
We want a national government to be formed for five years immediately after the election to restore peace, public security and ensure the country’s progress, he told an iftar party, reports the UNB.
B Chowdhury, also a former President, said the national government will have to be formed pulling mature brains together for a better future of Bangladesh by removing conflicts among political parties.
BDB arranged the iftar at Gulshan’s All Community Club in honour of diplomats stationed here.
B Chowdhury said the country’s people have long been suffering for four main problems—widespread corruption and bribery, limitless torture and repression, and strangulation of democracy, lack of the rule of law and tampering of the election process.
The number one solution to the problems is to hold a proper and acceptable election. We together with people will realise it if you (govt) are unwilling to do so, he said.
Besides, the former President said, parliament must be dissolved 100 days before the election, army will have to be deployed to main law and order and ensure security of voters and people, the Election Commission must be reconstituted with brave and competent persons and strong steps must be taken to prevent post-election violence and torture on voters and political workers.
Speaking at the programme, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the entire country and the nation—not any individual and particular party - - are now in crisis.
We must forge a strong unity putting aside trivial misunderstandings among us to get rid of the crisis and defeat the current dangerous autocratic government which is gradually destroying the nation’s all the achievements, he said.
Fakhrul said it is only the unity among political parties that can pave the way for installing a true pro-people government as per the hopes and aspirations of people.
Mentioning that the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the High Court order that granted their chairperson Khaleda Zia bail in two cases filed in Cumilla, he said the government has been hatching conspiracies to prolong her stay in jail since she was sent there.
The BNP leader demanded the government release Khaleda immediately from jail.
NagorikOikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rob, Gono Forum executive president Subrata Chowdhury and Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the programme.
