Dhaka: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the government will not bow down to any pressure over its ongoing anti-drug drive. 

‘We won’t bow down to any pressure… we only bow down to our public. The UN may observe the situation, it’s their right and we have no question about it,’ he said while replying to a query about any pressure from the United Nations over the anti-narcotic drive across the country. 

The minister was talking to reporters after attending the contract signing ceremony of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 (Package-7) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city. 

Replying to a question how long the drive will continue, Quader said, ‘The drive will continue until the situation comes under control.’ 

Talking about the death of Teknaf Municipality Councillor Ekramul Haque, the minister said, ‘Who is Ekram? He is our Jubo League President. If it’s proved that Ekram is innocent then those who identified him as guilty would be made guilty. Nobody will be spared in the drive against drug.’ 

Responding to a question about BNP’s remark about escape of godfather of drugs with government help, Quader said, ‘At first, we have to find out whether there’s any godfather in BNP. If Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP of Cox’s Bazar is found guilty he won’t be spared either.’ 

Referring to the concern of a group of intellectuals about the anti-narcotic drive, the minister said, ‘People are happy over the drive. Besides, the critics can create controversies over the issue but we’re doing our job.’
