Gazipur: A total of 29 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed in Gazipur city ahead of the city corporation elections.

The border guards were deployed at different parts of the city on Sunday morning to avert any untoward incident, said Mohsin Reza, BGB public relations officer.

The platoons will remain in duty till June 27, he added.

Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election will be held on Tuesday and the candidates can continue their campaigning till midnight on Sunday.

A total of 11 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming polls of 57 general ward councillors and 19 reserve women seats.

Seven aspirants -- Jahangir Alam of Awami League, Hasan Uddin Sarker of BNP, Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of Islami Oikkya Jote, Md Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed—are contesting for the mayoral post.

Earlier, the GCC polls were scheduled to be held on May 15, but the High Court had stayed it.

Later, the Appellate Division reviewed the High Court order and asked the Election Commission to hold the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Election within June 28.
