Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said the victory of Awami League’s candidates in the recently-concluded Gazipur City Corporation election is showing the path for the party’s victory.

‘The election results are showing the path of our win and taking us to victory,’ she said highlighting the importance of the recent elections to Gazipur and Khulna cities, reports the UNB.

The Prime Minister made the remarks when newly elected Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Jahangir Alam along with new councillors met her at her official residence Ganobhaban on Saturday.

Congratulating the newly elected mayor and councillors of Gazipur City Corporation for their victory, Sheikh Hasina said it is the unity that acted as the main strength behind the Awami League’s victory in the election. This has been possible as all the party followers were united there, she added.

Hasina, also the Awami League President, said her party won the Khulna city corporation election as all the party workers were united forgetting their differences and grievances in Khulna as well, she added.

Putting emphasis on maintaining the unity among her party leaders and activists, she said if Awami League is united, it achieves whatever it wants.

‘Whenever Awami League was united, it could overcome all the barriers. This victory has proved that when Awami League is determined, it gets victory,’ the AL chief said.

Terming it the victory of all leaders and activists, Hasina said the victory is a result of coordinated works of all leaders and activists.

Pointing at newly elected mayor Jahangir Alam, Hasina said she advised 39-year-old man to work for the development of Gazipur city taking experiences from senior leaders.

Awami League General Secretary Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Gazipur city Awami League President Azmat Ullah Khan and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq also spoke on the occasion.

Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam was unofficially elected in the Gazipur City Corporation election on June 26 last defeating his nearest rival BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar by a huge margin of 202,399 votes.

Jahangir bagged 400,010 votes while Hasan Uddin polled 197,611 in the election.
