Swedish envoy lauds Bangladesh media coverage over Rohingya issue
Dhaka: Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Charlotta Schlyter at an open discussion here on Thursday lauded Bangladesh media for their coverage on the Rohingya issue.
‘Media in Bangladesh are playing an enormous role on the Rohingya issue. But, sometimes that was not recognized…I do believe that Bangladesh has a strong and very good journalism,’ she said.
Lokkho, a news presentation academy, organized the discussion titled ‘Rohingya Crisis: Role of Media’ at the Daily Star Center auditorium in the city, reports the BSS.
Norwegian Ambassador to Bangladesh Sidsel Bleken, Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Professor Dr Abul Mansur, Diplomatic Editor of the daily Ittefaq Mainul Alam, Chief News Editor of Channel 24 Rahul Raha and UNHCR Representative Joseph Surja, among others, addressed the discussion.
Schlyter said Bangladesh has done a fantastic job as the country has given shelter to around one million Rohingya people.
She said, ‘We have to continue our support. We need a solution for the people (Rohingyas) to be able to have a normal life in their own country (Myanmar).’
The Swedish diplomat suggested highlighting the facts instead of emotions and said investigative journalism on the Rohingya issue is always encouraged.
She said ‘Sweden has been putting pressure on the international community as well as Myanmar to bring back the oppressed Rohingya people. It is a responsibility of the international community not only Bangladesh.’
Norwegian Ambassador Bleken said Bangladesh has made an example by providing shelter to the Rohingya people coming from Myanmar.
She said there is the need of international engagement to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
Bleken said Bangladeshi media are playing a significant role to end the Rohingya crisis.
She said reporters should be more careful on the Rohingya issues especially those related to women and children.
