Dhaka: Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Wednesday said there is little scope to reform the existing 30 percent quota for freedom fighters in government service.

The minister came up with the remarks at a press conference on preservation of quota for freedom fighters in government jobs and the ministry’s recent activities at the secretariat.

‘Though there’s a provision to recruit people from merit list if eligible candidates are not available to fill up posts from the Freedom Fighters’ quota but still there’s a legal obligation to preserve at least 30 percent quota for FFs,’ he said.

Citing a Supreme Court verdict over FF quota, Mozammel said, ‘There’s no chance to take different decisions ignoring the court order. If it’s done, that will be tantamount to contempt of court.’

‘Hope, the committee formed by the government over quota reform issue would take decision on it cautiously. A copy of the Supreme Court verdict in this regard was sent to the committee today,’ he said.

Replying to reporters quarry, the minister said ‘There’s no complication in changing quota for others except the freedom fighters. If the government wants to reform the FF quota it has to be done through court.’

On July 2, the Public Administration Ministry formed the committee to review the existing quota system in government jobs.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days.
