Dhaka: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, on Tuesday, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed them for taking tough steps against the people who are responsible for the Sunday’s road crash.

He also said no matter how powerful they are, they would not be spared.

The minister was speaking to journalists at noon at his Secretariat office after visiting the family members of Dia Khanam Mim, one of the two college students killed in the incident at the airport road.

Earlier, the minister went to Mim's house at Mohakhali's Southpara and consoled her father, mother and siblings.

The minister said, ‘Prime Minister expressed her deep grief and sorrow about the accident and death of two students and I have conveyed the massage and assurance of the Prime Minister to the deceased’s family during my visit.’

Minister Asaduzzaman Khan also said that two buses were seized and the drivers and helpers were arrested and action would be taken against them after investigation according to the existing laws.

Mentioning the instructions of the Prime Minister on taking effective actions to stop road accidents, he assured that they were taking measures to increase the quality of Dhaka city’s existing traffic system which would drop road accident rate and improve road safety.

While speaking about the protest of students resulting heavy traffic gridlock in the city, he said, ‘Government supports the demands of the students and they have the right to speak out and protest.’

However, the minister also said ‘As the government is looking after the issue with great sympathy and taking tough steps against the responsible people, I hope they will go back to study soon.’     

In the programme, the minister said his ministry was planning to undertake a special project on Dhaka’s traffic titled ‘Safe Dhaka’ and within the project every vehicle of the city could be monitored by CCTV camera which would help to identify the offenders.

Answering a quarry of a reporter on Assam’s stripping 40 lakh people off from the list of Indian citizenship and the possibility to kick them off to Bangladesh, he said it was the duty of foreign ministry and his ministry was not ‘clearly’ aware about it.

However, he also said after 1971, some people might have gone to Assam but, he estimated, the figure would not be that high.
