Right bodies seek an end to attacks on students
Dhaka: Human rights organisations, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), and Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB), have demanded an immediate ending of the attacks and repressions on the students for raising their voice seeking road safety.
Condemning the attacks on journalists, the organisations also asked to free Shahidul Alam, Managing Director of Drik Gallery and Chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, who was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) members on Sunday night from his residence.
Two statements, issued on Monday, signed by ASK Executive Director and HRFB Convener Sheepa Hafiza, made the demands.
Mentioning the attacks on the students and journalists on August 2, 4 and 5 in the city’s Mirpur and Jigatala areas, it said “We came to know from the media reports that law enforcers were present during the incident and attacked the students instead of protecting them.”
The statements also said “The attackers are the Chhatra League and Jubo League workers, we came to know from social media and students.”
Terming the attacks as ‘very regrettable’ ASK and HRFB also said the government is creating anxiety and extreme insecurity in public life in the name of suppressing peaceful movement.
The organisations also demanded to ensure the safety of the children and journalists and to bring the attackers to book.
