Sylhet: BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury has won the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, according to the result sheets of the reelection in two centres, where voting was postponed due to various irregularities on July 30.

Ariful bagged 2,097 votes in the two centres, taking his total tally to 92,593 in all 134 centres while Awami League’s Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran polled 86,397, including 527 votes in the two centres.

However, returning officer M Alimuzzaman did not publish the results officially, reports the UNB.

Earlier, the voting in the reelection started at 8am and continued till 4pm.

On July 30, the announcement of the results was postponed as the number of votes in the two centres was higher than the difference between the two leading candidates’ tallies.

Ariful Haque had taken a lead of 4,626 votes in 132 centres bagging 90,496 votes against Kamran’s 85,870 while the number of voters in the two centres was 4,787.

On August 1, the Election Commission set August 11 for reelection in the two centres.
