Dhaka: Prime Minister‘s Energy Advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury has suggested the Science and Technology Ministry to examine the potentials of setting up small-scale power plants with small nuclear reactor.

Addressing a seminar on nuclear power technology at Biduyt Bhaban in the city, he said the Bangladesh Power and Energy Research Council (PERC) will provide all necessary supports in this regard if the Science and Technology Ministry take initiative on the issue, reports the UNB.

The PERC organised the seminar titled: ‘An Overview of Nuclear Energy and Development Status of Innovative Reactors‘, was also addressed by State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, Nuclear and Science secretary Anwar Hossain, Energy secretary Abu Hena Mohammad Rahmatul Munim and PERC chairman Shahin Chowdhury.

Bangladesh is constructing a 2400 MW nuclear power plant in Rooppur of Pabna with Russian technology where Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom has been working as a contractor.

Former chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Md Ali Zulkarnine and former BUET Prof Dr AM Rashid Sharier jointly presented a keynote paper on the topic of the seminar.

Terming the nuclear power as cheaper electricity Nasrul Hamid said the Power and Energy Ministry has been working to make a synchronisation in the grid system between the conventional power and nuclear power so that they can function smoothly.

Explaining different aspects of security of the nuclear power plant in Rooppur, Anwar Hossain said the spent fuel will be repatriated by Russia to its own land while the country will provide training to Bangladeshi officials on security aspects.
