Dhaka: Shia community people brought out Tazia processions in the city on Friday amid tight security, marking the Holy Ashura.

The main Tajia procession started from Imambara Husaini Dalan in Old Dhaka at 10:00am and ended at Dhanmondi’s Jigatola which was escorted by law enforcers, reports the UNB.

The Tajia procession paraded different streets at Azimpur, Bakshibazar and Newmarket areas.

People including women and children participated in the procession wearing their traditional black dress as the symbol of mourning.

Tajia processions were also brought out from Imambara Paltan, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Maghbazar, Bakshibazar in the morning.

No people were also allowed to join the processions without passing through archways and checking.

Adequate security was ensured around Imambara HusainiDalan and its adjacent areas to ensure smooth observance of Ashura, police said.

Superintendent of Imambara Husaini Dalan M M Firoz told UNB that 300 volunteers worked for ensuring discipline along with the huge police force which made possible to end the procession without any unwanted incident.

Like previous years, nobody carrying bags, sharp weapons or flammable objects was allowed to enter the venues of Holy Ashura programmes.

City dwellers were also asked to refrain from lighting firecrackers on the day.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of Yazid’s soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).

The day is a public holiday.
