Steps afoot to revamp airport security system: Minister
Dhaka: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Friday said steps have been taken to revamp the security system of the country’s airports to take it to international standards.
‘Security at airports has been tightened as envoys of some countries, including the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, expressed concerns over the security at our airports,’ he told a views-exchange meeting with Bangladeshi expatriates at Cirdap auditorium in the city.
Bishaw Probashi Bangali, a platform of expatriates, organised the meeting. Additional IGP Mukhlesur Rahman was also present at the programme.
As his attention was drawn at the fact that the expatriates have to stand in long queues at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for entering the airport, the Home Minister said the airport authorities across the world have strengthened the security to face possible terrorist attacks.
He also noted that Bangladesh is well ahead of many other countries in curbing terrorism and militancy.
However, the authorities will make sure that no one faces any hassle at the airports, he added.
Asaduzzaman also urged the expatriate Bangladeshis to be cautious against cheating while investing in the country.
‘I know many expatriates become victims of cheating after investing here as in most cases they (expatriate Bangladeshis) are allured by others to invest in more profiting businesses or in land,’ he said and advised them to invest after proper scrutiny.
In his speech, Additional IGP Mukhlesur Rahman urged the expatriates to remain alert against militant financing, saying militants are receiving money from abroad. ‘The source of the militant financing is not Bangladesh; rather it comes from abroad, especially from the US and European countries,’ he said.
He also urged them to identify those who send finance for militancy here and give information about the financers.
Expatriate Bangladeshis, including Hosne Ara Begum, Idris Forai, Laizu Khandker, Nurul Hasan and GM Kibriya, also spoke at the programme with AKM Basir Alam Chowdhury Sabu in the chair.
