Khalaf murder: SC order on review plea Sunday

Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Thursday set Sunday for delivering its order on a review petition filed against its judgement that upheld the death penalty of Saiful Islam Mamun in Saudi Arabian Embassy official Khalaf Al-Ali murder case.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date after hearing the review petition, reports the UNB.
Advocate Akhter Hamid stood for the petitioner.
Earlier on November 1, 2017, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order that gave death sentence to Mamun, life term to three others — Md Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu and Rafiqul Islam.
Khalaf Al Ali, 45, a non-diplomatic official with the consular section of the embassy, was shot near his Gulshan residence on the night of March 5, 2012. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital the next day.
A murder case was filed with Gulshan Police Stationaccusing five people,two days after the killing.
On December 30, 2012, a Dhaka court had sentenced all the five accused of the case to death.
However, the decision was overturned when the convicts’ appeal and death reference was sent to the HC.
In 2013, the HC acquitted fugitive SelimChowdhury,reduced the sentences of Md Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu and Rafiqul Islam to life in prison and upheld the death sentence of Saiful Islam Mamun.
The state filed an appeal with the SC in 2014.
