‘Robber’ killed in Shariatpur ‘gunfight’

Shariatpur: A suspected ring leader of a robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dasharta village in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Salauddin, alias Sagal alias Kamal alias Aslam, 39, son of late Ali Ahmmed Hawlader, a resident of Gosairhat union of Gosairhat upazila and accused in six robbery cases, reports the UNB.

Abdul Momen, superintendent of Shariatpur Police, said a team of detective branch of police arrested Salauddin from Kajirhat in Jajiraupazila on Tuesday noon.

After gleaning information in primary interrogation, a team of police of Palong Model Thana conducted drive in an orchard near a mosque of the village around 1:30am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, his gang members opened fire, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight, leaving Salauddin injured with bullet.

Later, the injured was taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Four policemen were also injured, he said.

They recovered a shootergun, six crude bombs, sharp weapons from the spot.
