Crop production doubles in 24 yrs
Parliament: Bangladesh's crop production has increased to almost double in the 24 years since 1991-1992 fiscal, according to statistics placed by Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury in Parliament on Monday.
The amount of produced crops— rice, wheat and maize— was 193.40 lakh metric tons in 1991-1992 fiscal which reached 384.19 lakh metric tons in 2014-2015 fiscal year.
Matia Chowdhury placed the data replying to a starred question from treasury bench lawmaker Shamsul Hoque Tuku (Pabna-1).
Drawing a comparison between the crop production in the regimes of BNP and Awami League, she said that was 189.77 lakh metric tons in 1995-1996 fiscal (at the end of BNP tenure), while it was 267.58 lakh metric tons in 2000-2001 (at the end of AL's regime).
Besides, the production was 280.49 lakh metric tons in 2005-2006 fiscal (during the last fiscal of BNP regime), while it was 328.95 lakh metric tons in 2008-2009 fiscal (at beginning of AL tenure) and 384.19 lakh metric tons in 2014-2015 fiscal.
