Panchagarh: A Panchagarh court on Tuesday put two suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and a Shibir member, on 15-day police custody in connection with the killing of a Hindu priest in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Marjia Khatun passed the order when officer-in-charge of Debiganj Police Station Aiyub Ali, also the investigation officer of the case, produced JMB men Khalilur Rahmna, Babul Hossain, and Islami Chhatra Shibir activist Jahangir Alam, before the court and sought 20-day police custody.

Earlier, police arrested the trio during a drive in the Sunday night.

Superintendent of police Gias Uddin said the arrested JMB activists were accused in the 2005 series bomb attack case.

Meanwhile, two cases were filed with Debiganj police on Sunday night in connection with the murder.

Rabindra Chandra Roy, elder brother of slain priest Jogeshwar Roy, filed a case while the other one was filed by the police station under the Explosive Substances Act.

Besides, police formed an eight-member committee with additional police super Deen Mohammad as its head to oversee the progress of investigation.

On the other hand, several thousand people staged demonstrations in the upazila headquarters on Monday protesting the killing of the Hindu priest.

Under the banner of ‘Debiganj Upazilabashi’, the demonstrators formed a human chain at Bijoy Chattar in the morning.

People from all walks of life, including students, took part in the human chain and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.

Jogeshwar Roy, 50, a Hindu temple priest, was hacked to death and Gopal Chandra Roy, 35, a devotee, was shot in an attack by some miscreants in Debiganj upazila on Sunday morning.
