PM opens Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal bridges
Dhaka: Sheikh Kamal and Sheikh Jamal bridges on Patuakhali-Kuakata Road have formally been opened to traffic on Thursday morning.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the bridges at about 11:15am from Ganobhaban through videoconferencing.
The 500-metre long Sheikh Jamal Bridge was constructed at a cost of Tk 43.5 crore and the 900-metre Sheikh Kamal Bridge involving Tk 65 crore.
The construction work of Sheikh Kamal Bridge over the River Andharmanik in Kalapara was completed two months ago, while the building of Sheikh Kamal Bridge over the River Sonatala was ended a month earlier.
On 25 February 2012, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stones of the two bridges and Shaheed Sheikh Russel Bridge across three rivers on 72-km-long Patuakhali-Kuakata Road.
On 20 August 2015, Sheikh Hasina formally opened the 408.36-metre-long and 10.25-metre-wide Shaheed Sheikh Russel Bridge on the Shibbaria River at Mohipur point on Patuakhali-Kuakata Road.
The three bridges are named after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s three sons, also brothers of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
