Dhaka: Awami League joint secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Wednesday said the BNP-Jammat-Oikyofront clique is not only spreading false allegation and propaganda to make the election controversial but also distributing illegal money and trying to destroy the congenial election environment.

He came up with the complaints at the party’s regular press briefing at its president’s Dhanmondi political office, reports the UNB.

Mentioning the arrest of three people in the city on Tuesday for allegedly distributing money among voters to influence the national election, Nanak said, ‘Rab men arrested them, including a businessman and a former employee of Hawa Bhaban with Tk 8 crore in cash and cheques of Tk 10 crore, a poster of BNP-nominated candidate with Tareque Rahman photo and a full voter list of a constituency area.’

‘An amount of Tk 150 crore was distributed across the country in the last two months,’ he said, claiming that Tk 200 crore was brought from Dubai through Hundi and banking channels by Tarique Rahman who was convicted for corruption.

The senior leader of Awami League said the incident hinted a big conspiracy against the country and the upcoming election and engagement of Pakistani intelligence ISI.

‘The primary investigation says this huge money was distributed to disrupt and influence the upcoming national election alongside creating a law-and-order situation through violence,’ he added.

Pointing at Dr Kamal’s behaviour with the Election Commissioners in Tuesday’s meeting, the leader said the nation does not expect such arrogant behaviour from any democratic party.

He said, ‘The EC faces the situation carefully and tolerantly without showing any reactions. The Commission plays a sincere role to present a participatory election though Dr Kamal and their alliance made serious fouls several times.’

‘We want to say clearly that every party will have to behave in a democratic and legal way to hold a fair and participatory election. The BNP-Jammat- Oikyofront clique is not only making derogatory comments and false allegations to make the election questionable but they are also distributing illegal money and trying to destroy the congenial electoral environment,’ he added.

He claimed that the opposition alliance is always trying to blame the Awami league for the violence using their intraparty conflicts. ‘They are also spreading propaganda against the government, administration and patriotic armed forces,’ the AL leader added.
