Dec 30 polls ‘a cruel mockery’ with nation: Mirza Fakhrul
Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the election held on December 30 was ‘a cruel mockery’ with the nation.
‘It was mockery, a cruel mockery with the nation, and the nation has plunged into darkness with this election,’ he said, reports the UNB.
The BNP leader came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at city’s Nirbachan Bhaban after submitting a memorandum to the Election Commission.
Earlier, a delegation of Oikyafront, led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, went to the Election Commission around 3 pm and submitted a memorandum to the EC demanding cancellation of 11th national election and holding a fresh one under a non-party and neutral government.
The memorandum, signed by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, contains allegations of various irregularities in the national election, including creating obstacles towards getting nomination, ‘mysterious role’ of the EC and the returning officers in the scrutiny of nomination papers, arrest of candidates, discouraging local and foreign observers, creating obstacles towards electioneering by opposition candidates, controlling social and mass media and making the army inactive.
The memorandum also demanded cancellation of 11th national election and arrangement of a new election under non-party and neutral government.
Replying to a question why they came here while the new government has already taken oath, he said, ‘We’ve come here as the Election Commission conducted the 11th parliamentary election.’
Answering to another question whether Oikyafront candidates who won the December-30 election will take oath, Fakhrul said, ‘We’ve rejected the results, so there’s no question about taking oath.’
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, President of Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) ASM Abdur Rab, President of Krishak Sramik Janata League Bangabir Kader Siddiqui, Convenor of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gonoforum General Secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu were among the delegation members.
