Chattogram: Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission Iqbal Mahmood on Sunday made sudden visits to a number of schools in the city on Sunday and found most of their teachers absent.

Without any prior notice, the ACC chief arrived here around 8:15 am and inspected several schools after being informed that the teachers of most schools do not attend classes regularly, reports the UNB.

During his visit to Kattoli Nurul Haque Chowdhury Primary School, he found only the acting headmaster among eight teachers present at the school and the students were passing time roaming around its compound.

Seeing the ACC chief, the guardians expressed their frustration over the education of their children.

‘No one will be allowed to play with the academic life of our children. Education has to be ensured in classrooms at any cost,’ the annoyed ACC chief told reporters after visiting the school.

If required, he warned, the ACC will enforce section 166 of the Penal Code if anyone tries to harm the future of the next generation.

Later, he visited Bhatiari Government Primary School and found two out of its 11 teachers absent.

The school authorities, however, could not justify to the ACC chairman why the teachers were absent.

Examining the attendance book, the ACC chief found that the students who remained absent on Saturday were shown present today. Besides, the teachers did not update the attendance sheet till 10pm.

He later went to inspect Shitolpur High School and found that the students who failed to pass the class-IX final examination were allowed to get admitted to class X after paying an extra fee of Tk 2,000 each.

Expressing anger over the matter, Iqbal Mahmood said, ‘This is unethical. There’s no room for immorality in the education sector.’
