JCD returns to DU after 9 years and BCL welcomes
Dhaka: Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP, made their first appearance on the Dhaka University campus in nine years on Wednesday, demanding that the institution’s student body election be rescheduled.
About 200 leaders and activists of the BNP student front came to the historic Madhur Canteen around 11am. They were led by JCD President Rajib Ahsan, General Secretary Akram Hossain, its Dhaka University unit chief Al Mehedi Hasan Talukder and General Secretary Basar Siddiqi.
They stayed there until 1:30pm and held a media briefing, reports the UNB.
Members of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL’s) Dhaka University unit, led by General Secretary Saddam Hossain, greeted them at the canteen.
The DU authorities on Monday announced that Dhaka University Center Students Union (Ducsu) election would be held on March 11.
The development was met with mixed reactions. Only the ruling Awami League student front, Chhatra League, welcomed the move.
Chhatra Dal leaders demanded that the election be arranged after ensuring a congenial election atmosphere on the campus. Rajib also raised seven demands, including the coexistence of all active student bodies.
‘We’ve asked the university authorities to defer Ducsu polls by three months and announce a fresh election schedule,’ he said.
JCD General Secretary Akram hoped that the peaceful political coexistence would continue reviving the glorious days of student politics.
Chhatra League’s President Rezwanul Haque Shovon welcomed the BNP student front to Madhuer Canteen but said it is time for a change in JCD’s leadership since most of them are not students.
