Dhaka: Syeda Zakia Nur, sister of late Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, on Saturday took oath as a member of the 11th parliament from Kishoreganj-1 constituency.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath at Parliament Bhaban, said a Parliament Secretariat handout, reports the UNB.

Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury and Whip Iqbalur Rahim were present at the oath-taking event.

Awami League contender Syeda Zakia Nur was elected unopposed as there was no other candidate against her in the Kishoreganj-1 by-election scheduled for February 28.

The Election Commission on February 13 last declared Syeda Zakia Nur elected in an official gazette after the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

AL nominated Syed Zakia Nur as its candidate for Kishorganj-1 by-polls after the EC on January 10 announced the by-election schedule following the death of former AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.

Ashraful Islam, also son of national leader Syed Nazrul Islam, was elected from the same constituency in the December-30 general election, but died on January 3 before taking oath as MP.
