Thakurgaon: Director General (DG) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Md Shafeenul Islam on Monday described the killings of three people in firing by the paramilitary force members at Bahrampur in Haripur upazila here as ‘unexpected’.

He came up with the remark while speaking at a press conference at Thakurgaon Circuit House in the afternoon, reports the UNB.

The BGB chief also said all, including his force members and locals, will have to remain alert to avert the recurrence of such incident in the future.

The BGB has formed a high-level five-member committee, headed by its Additional Director General Brigadier General Sazzad Hossain, to look into the incident and the committee has been asked to submit its report as soon as possible, he said, adding that further actions will be taken after receiving the report.

Shafeenul Islam also talked to three local UP members and six residents but refrained from visiting the place of occurrence.

Senior BGB officials Brigadier Khandaker Farid Hasan and Colonel Matiur Rahman, BGB Thakurgaon Sector Commander Colonel Shamsul Arefin, Commanding Officer of Thakurgaon-50 BGB Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Tuhin Mohammad Masud, Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Dr AKM Quamruzzaman Selim and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Moniruzzaman were present at the press conference.

On February 12, three people were killed and at least 16 others injured after BGB members opened fire during a clash with villagers at Bahrampur village in Haripur upazila.
