PM to open Karnaphuli Tunnel boring work Sunday: Quader
Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the boring work on Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on Sunday, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
‘The Prime Minister will inaugurate the main work on the tunnel at 11 am on Sunday,’ Quader said, reports the UNB on Saturday.
Senior Information officer of the ministry Abu Naser said Sheikh Hasina will open the work at the construction yard of Patenga.
He said the 3.43-km long tunnel, involving Tk 9880.4 crore, will have an approach road of 5.63 kilometres linking the main city, port and western side of the Karnaphuli along with the heavy industry-prone eastern side of the river.
The tunnel will connect the Naval Academy point at Patenga with Anwara on the other side. It will cut the road distance between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, apart from facilitating the heavy traffic on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway entering the port city to go to other parts of Chattogram division.
Quader earlier said 32 percent work on the tunnel project had been completed. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
