Writ seeks compensation for Chawkbazar fire victims
Dhaka: A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking Tk 30 lakh compensation for the families of each of the Chawkbazar fire victims.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond submitted the petition to the High Court in the morning, reports the UNB.
The writ sought the court’s directive on removal of chemical warehouses, formation of a judicial inquiry committee to identify the people responsible for the fire incident as well as necessary directives to demolish illegal structures in the old part of the city.
Secretaries to the Home Ministry, Finance Ministry, Industry Ministry, mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation and two others have been made respondents of the writ.
The hearing of the writ is likely to be held on Monday in the bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice M Kamrul Kader.
At least 67 people were killed and 41 others injured on Wednesday night after a devastating fire broke out at a chemical warehouse and raged through several nearby buildings at Chawkbazar.
