Cops to check irregularities during UC polls: CEC
Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday said the police will check any possible irregularities during the upcoming Union Council elections.
‘The police will check all kinds of irregularities till having their last bullet,’ he said.
The CEC was talking to reporters after a meeting with top law enforcement officials at the National Economic Council auditorium over the first phase of the UC polls to be held on 22 March.
The CEC also said the election officers-in-charge and other law enforcers will make sure that there is no ballot stuffing overnight, while police will check any untoward incidents during voting hours at polling stations.
Rakib said those who stuff ballots are a handful of miscreants who belong to no specific political parties and they will face toughest action if caught.
Asked whether there is any pressure from the government over UC polls, he trashed such claims saying there has been no contact from them in this regard. ‘We see no pressure. None of the government makes phone call and tell us nothing.’
He said the EC is going to introduce online nomination filing system soon to address problem that candidates are facing obstruction in submission of nomination papers.
‘We’ve kept scope to place nomination papers in more than one place. We’ll also go for the online nomination submission system as early as possible. If so, the problem will be no more, he said, replying to a question that many candidates are allegedly obstructed from filing their nomination papers.
Replying to a question whether the CEC thinks it is normal situation when many candidates are being elected unopposed, he said if there is no problem in the submission process of nomination papers, there would be no question about whether the number of candidates is one or ten.
