Sunamganj: A schoolboy was killed and 30 others injured in a clash over a football match at Abdul Gofur High School and College playground in Dakkhin Sunamganj upazila on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Gilman Hossain, a class IX student of the school and son of Abdul Kadir, a resident of Borokapan Bhadeshwar village of the upazila.

Quoting locals and police, UNB reports the clash ensued between two groups of villagers in the area about 2:00pm over a football match, which was part of the annual sports event of the institution.

Some former students of the school were present at the competition as volunteers.

At one point, a group of the current students of the school locked into an altercation with the formers over a trifling matter.

As a sequel to this, two groups of villagers from Alampur and Borokapan Bhadeshwar areas attacked each other with home-made sharp weapons, leaving Gilman and 30 others injured.

Later, locals rushed Gilman to MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the evening.

The other injured took primary treatment at Koitab health sub-centre.

Officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Sunamganj Police Station Md Al-Amin Hossain confirmed the incident.

Law enforcers were deployed to fend off any further trouble, he added.
