Dhaka: One of the five students of Dhaka University (DU), who went on a hunger strike demanding reelection to Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) on Tuesday, fell sick and was hospitalised on Wednesday afternoon.

The ailing protester was identified as third-year philosophy student Anindya Mondol who was also a member candidate of Jagannath Hall union, reports the UNB.

Another man, Tawhid Tanjin, a final-year computer science student who was a transport affairs secretary candidate, said Anindya fell sick around 4 pm due to extreme weakness and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

‘We haven’t eaten or taken any drink anything since last night, and Anindya fell sick. So far, no one from the university administration has contacted us,’ he said.

The hunger strike by the five DU students rolled into the second day today.

The rest of the students are Soyeb Mahmud, a second-year physics student who was a candidate for literature affairs secretary of Shahidullah Hall union, Md Mainiddin, a second-year population sciences student who contested the polls for cultural affairs secretary of Mohsin Hall Union and Roni Hossain, a final-year geography student and a resident of Bijoy Ekattor Hall. He did not contest the election.

Ducsu polls, the first in 28 years, were marred by allegations of irregularities. All panels, except that of Bangladesh Chhatra League, boycotted the election alleging vote fraud.

The BCL panel dominated the polls but its vice-president candidate Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon was defeated by quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur.

VP-elect Nur also demanded reelection to all posts citing irregularities and holding them under the supervision of new officials.
