Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated the second Kanchpur Bridge on Shitalakkhya River toreduce bottlenecks on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.

The four-lane bridge is397.3-metre long and 18.1-metrewide, the UNB reported.

Prime Minister Hasina opened the bridge, a four-lane flyover at Bhulta and a railway overpass at Latifpur on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway through a videoconference from her official residence Ganobhaban.

Japanese contractors Obayshi Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, JFE Engineer Corporation, and IHI Infra Systems Company Limited started construction of the second Kanchpur Bridge along with the second Meghna and second Meghna-Gumti bridges on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in January 2016.

The construction work of second Kanchpur Bridge was completed nearly four months ahead of the June 2019 deadline.

On the other hand, three tier 1.3km four lane Bhulta Flyover has been constructed at a cost of Tk 353.36 crore at Bhulta of Rupganj in Narayanganj.

Chinese construction companies China Railway 24 Bureau Group, Spectra Engineers Limited and MN Builders implemented the project.

Concerned officials hope that the Flyover will significantly reduce traffic jams, infuse dynamism in trade and commerce related activities and ease road communication between Dhaka and Sylhet.

Meanwhile, inauguration of the newly-constructed 456.37-metre long Latifpur Flyover is expected to help decrease traffic congestion at Latifpur on Dhaka-Tangail Highway.
