Bangladesh political parties need to remain on democratic track
Dhaka: Observing that Bangladesh has got stable under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership, visiting BJP national secretary general Ram Madhav on Saturday said the country’s political parties have to remain on the track of democratic process like elections.
Madhav made the remark when he met the Prime Minister at her official residence Ganobahban.
PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting, reported United News of Bangladesh.
Madhav said Bangladesh’s overall development under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership is overwhelming.
About ensuring uninterrupted democratic process in Bangladesh, he said political parties in Bangladesh have to remain on the track of democratic process like elections.
Madhav also thanked the Prime Minister for ensuring the security of Bangladesh minority communities.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla, PM's Advisers Dr Gowher Rizvi and Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, and Principal Secretary M Abul Kalam Azad were present.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh attaches the highest importance to its relations with India.
Appreciating the ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) by Indian Parliament, she said all the political parties unanimously passed the bill with the same spirit of the great Liberation War in 1971.
Sheikh Hasina thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
About the democratic process of India, she said it enjoys uninterrupted democracy while Bangladesh's democracy suffered jolts several times.
Referring to the upcoming Union Council polls, Sheikh Hasina said, democracy in Bangladesh is now continuing and election to the lowest tire of local government body like Panchayet in India is going to be held from 22 March.
Pointing to BNP's election boycott in the past, the prime minister said political parties must remain in the democratic process.
She mentioned that the nation has the bitter experience of disruption of democracy when military rulers captured power and formed political parties.
The PM also referred to Bangladesh’s Supreme Court verdict declaring illegal the capture of power by military.
She said Awami League is a party that strives to strengthen democratic and pluralistic values in the country and it never compromised its against attempts by the forces to radicalise the country.
