In separate incidents, a female garment worker has reportedly been gang-raped in Tangail district while a teenage girl raped by an imam in Cumilla, reports the UNB.

In Tangail, the garment worker was gang-raped after being abducted along with her husband from the bus terminal area of Tangail municipality on Friday night.

Police rescued the victim from the veranda of a school early Saturday and arrested six accused.

Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tangail Model Police Station, said the victim works for a garment factory at Gorai in Mirzapur upazila while her husband is a construction worker. They got married barely 10 months back.

As soon as the couple got down from a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at the new bus stand around 10am while going to Gorai from the house of victim’s father in Kalihati upazila, a group of miscreants rushed to them.

Three of them took the victim’s husband to a little distance, beat him and held him hostage while some others took the garment worker to the bank of a nearby lake and raped her there in turns.

Later, they handed her over to other gang members who took her to Kodalia and took turns to rape her there.

Meanwhile, the victim’s husband managed to escape from the clutches of the hoodlums around 12am on Saturday, rushed to the Tangail Model Police Station and narrated the incident to the officer-in-charge.

In a prompt action, four police teams launched drives at separate places of the municipality and rescued the victim from the veranda of Charjana Govt Primary School in the early hours of Saturday. They also arrested two alleged rapists from the spot.

Besides, four other accused were arrested from other places.

The arrestees are Yusuf, son of Alamgir Hossain, Rabiul Islam Robin, son of Abdur Rashid, Mofiz, son of Fazlu Mia, Tanjurul Islam Tasin, son of Rakibul Islam, Jahidul Islam, son of Abul Hossain, and Imon, son of Betkar Mia, all residents of Kodalia area, the OC said.

Of them, Yusuf, Robin and Mofiz confessed before a court on Saturday evening to the crime, he said, adding that they were trying to arrest two more culprits – Ujjal and Hasan.

The victim was sent to the one-stop crisis centre of Tangail General Hospital.

Victim’s husband filed a case against the eight in this regard.

In Cumilla, the 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the imam of a mosque in Debidwar upazila on Saturday.

Police arrested the accused, Mahfuzur Rahman, 21, imam of Chhoto Shalghar Dakkhinpara Baitul Falah Jame Mosque and son of M Saidul Islam of Viralla village in the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Debidwar Police Station M Jahirul Anwar said the imam seduced the teenage girl into going to his room around 10am and raped her after gagging her with a napkin.

The victim narrated the incident to her mother after returning home, he said.

The girl was sent to hospital for medical examination.

The victim’s father filed a case in this regard, the OC said, adding that the imam confessed to his crime.
