Transport workers go on 24-hr strike in Chattogram

Chattogram: Transport workers in the district started a 24-hour strike from 6 pm on Wednesday, demanding justice for their fellow who was beaten dead allegedly by Detective Branch (DB) police. 

A regional committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation earlier 
 announced to observe 24-hour strike in two phases- one from  6 pm Wednesday to 6pm on Thursday on 68 district routes connecting Chattogram and 19 local routes  and the second phase on April 28, reports the UNB.

General Secretary of the workers’ body Mohammad Musa said that the second phase of the strike will be enforced on all routes of five districts in the division for another 24 hours on April 28.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the killers and bringing them under trial.

The deceased was identified as Jalal Uddin, 50, a driver of the Shyamoli Paribahan, hailing from Dinajpur.

A group of men who identified themselves as DB police members stopped a bus for searching Yaba, had the driver get down from his vehicle and beat him brutally at 8 pm on Monday (April 22) leaving him severely injured, after the bus reached Shantirhat area of Patiya upazila, said Bablu Ahmed manager of Shyamoli Paribahan regional unit quoting the bus supervisor Azim Uddin.

Later, doctors declared the driver dead when he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
