Sylhet: Soon after his arrest in a case filed for reportedly threatening to rape and murder an intern of a private medical college hospital, police on Tuesday released a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader as he secured bail in the case.

Sarwar Hossain Chowdhury, vice-president of Dakkhin Surma upazila unit BCL, was freed from Kotwali Police Station around 2:30pm, one and half an hours into his arrest, said its officer-in-charge Selim Miah, reports the UNB.

He said the BCL leader obtained bail in the case before his arrest and he was allowed to walk out of the police station upon production of the bail paper.

Around 1pm, police arrested Sarwar from the Court Point area in the case filed for issuing murder and rape threats to the intern of Sylhet Women’s Medical College Hospital (SWMC).

Ferdous Hasan, director of the medical college, filed the case with Kotwali Police Station on Monday night accusing Sarwar and several other unnamed suspects.

On Saturday, he also filed a general diary seeking security of the intern.

According to the case statement, a group of 10-15 BCL men took one of their fellows to the medical college hospital on Thursday as he was suffering from stomach flu.

They locked into an altercation with the intern as she asked all of them except one to leave the room.

At one stage, Sarwar reportedly threatened to rape and murder her.

The intern made a post on her Facebook account over the incident, triggering protests by interns at the hospital and elsewhere in the city.
