Bagerhat: At least 10 people were shot in a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing supremacy at Udaypur union of Mollarhat upazila in Bagerhat on Friday morning.

Around 20 people were also injured during the clash.

The Mollarhat police officer-in-charge ASM Khairul Anam said supporters of two union council candidates were locked in a scuffle at about 9:30am.

The men of Awami League ward-1 president Azizur Rahman and ward-2 president Kamrul Islam equipped with firearms attacked each other, leaving 10 people injured by gunfire and 20 others wounded, said the police.

The bullet-hit activists were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, while others were taken to Mollarhat Health Centre and Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.

The OC said additional police members were deployed on the campus to avert further untoward incidents.

Local people and Mollarhat upazila Vice-Chairman Harunur Rashid said the Awami League leaders had long been at loggerheads with each other.
