2 BB deputy governors relieved of duty: Muhith
Dhaka: Two Bangladesh Bank deputy governors—Abul Quasem and Nazneen Sultana—have been relieved of their duty over the heist of $101 million from the central bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, said Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday.
Muhith made the disclosure while talking to reporters in front of the National Economic Council (NEC) before joining a pre-budget discussion there.
When the Finance Minister informed that deputy governors will be appointed afresh to the central bank, reporters told him that there are already four. In reply, he said, ‘No… two of them are gone.’
However, Muhith could not recollect their names immediately. When journalists uttered the names of Abul Quasem and Nazneen Sultana, he said, ‘Yes, they’re.’
He also said the probe panel formed with former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Mohammad Farashuddin as its head to look into the heist of heist of $101 million from the Bangladesh Bank’s account with the US Federal Reserve Bank has already started its work.
Hackers swindled $101 million out of Bangladesh Bank from its account with US Federal Reserves on February 4.
The incident came to light after foreign media published news items on it March 7.
