2 BRAC officials ‘abducted’ in Afghanistan

Pabna: Two Bangladeshi senior BRAC officials working in Afghanistan were reportedly abducted in Afghanistan on Thursday afternoon.
The hostages are chief engineer of BRAC Afghanistan branch Haji Shawkat, believed to be in his early fifty, and chief accountant Mohammad Sirazul Islam, ageed around 37, both are residents of Pabna.
BRAC human resource official Sabera Gulrukh told NTV Online a militant gang kidnapped the BRAC officials on gunpoint as they were travelling to Baghlan province from Kunduz area by a private car at about Afghan time 4:00pm.
She said they have already informed foreign ministry about the abduction.
Sirajul’s cousin, Abdul Khaleque Khan, also the director of Ansar and VDP Bank, asked for government’s assistance to rescue the kidnaped BRAC officials.
Brac has been working in Afghanistan since 2002. Setting up around 400 offices in the country’s 34 provinces, the NGO is providing education, healthcare, training, and development tools to the citizens of the war-hit country.
