Police administration has identified at least 50 polling centres in eight unions of Sadar upazila as risky, ahead of the upcoming union parishad (UP) elections, billed for 22 March.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Rahmat Ullah said 50 polling centers, of the total 95, in Sadar upazila have been found vulnerable while the rest 45 centres are general.

Special security measures have been taken for those risky polling centres, he said.

As per instruction of Election Commission, three policemen are to be deployed in each of the polling centres but the SMP decided to deploy six policemen in each, he added.

Besides, a mobile team of police will be deployed for three centres each while a striking force will be deployed in each union, said the deputy commissioner.

Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and ansar members will be on duty alongside police for maintaining law and order on the day, he said.

Rahmat Ullah said a special striking force will perform their duties round the clock.

Some 2,7370 people will cast their votes in the eight unions of Sadar upazila, which will go to polls on 22 March.

The unions are — Khadimpara, Khadimnagar, Tultikor, Tukernazar, Jalalabad, Hatkhola, Moglgaon and Kandirgaon.
