BGB deployed in 608 unions

Dhaka: As part of security arrangement, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in 608 union councils, out of the total 721 where polls are set to be held on 22 March, reports local news agency.

BGB headquarters public relations officer Mohsin Reza said BGB members were deployed in the electoral areas on Saturday evening.

Earlier on Friday night, members of the border force were kept on security duty in 10 municipalities that went to polls on Sunday.

The 10 municipalities are Haragachh in Rangpur, Kaliganj in Jhenidah, Jhalakati, Bhanga in Faridpur, Brahmanbaria and Nangalkot in Comilla, Kabirhat in Noakhali, Sonagazi in Feni, and Chakoria and Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.

Balloting began at 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break.

On 11 February last, the EC announced the schedule for the first phase election as part of its plan to arrange elections in more than 4200 out of the country’s 4546 UPs in six phases by June Next.
