20 hurt in Lakshmipur polling centre capturing bid

Lakshmipur:  At least 20 people were injured in clashes between supporters of candidates over bid to capture polling centres in Ramgati and Kamalnagar upazilas in Lakshmipur on Tuesday morning.

Separate clashes launched between the supporters of chairman and member candidates of Torabganj, Char Poragachha , and Hajirhat unions.

Torabganj Union Council

Police said supporters of member candidates Montaz Uddin and Abdul Matin involved in a clash at Char Pagla Government Primary School polling station in Torabganj union of Komolnagar at about 8:45am.

The factions also hurled crude bombs during the clash, which left six members of the both groups.

Police held two men, Majharul Islam and Shabuj, for their involvement in the clash.

Char Poragaccha Union Council

In another clash between the activists of boat symbol and spectacles symbol, 10 people were injured at Nomanbad Government Primary School centre in Char Poragachha union.

Hajirhat Union Council

Three people were injured during a clash between the supporters of member candidates at Char Jangalia Government Primary School centre in Hajirhat union.

The injured were taken to local hospitals.

Voting in the first phase of union council election began at six unions of Ramgati and Kamalganj upazila on Tuesday morning.

A total of 31 chairman candidates from the unions are participating in the election. Around 63 women candidates for reserved seats and over 191 members candidates are in the election race.

Some 92,967 voter, 46, 614 men and 46, 353 women, are eligible to exercise their franchise under these unions.
