Probe body formed on Pirojpur polls violence
Pirojpur: A probe body has been formed to investigate the police-BGB firing that claimed lives of five people after the first phase of union council election in Dhanishapa union of Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur on Tuesday.
The district administration formed the three-member investigation committee with additional district magistrate Mohammad Manik Har Rahman as its head early on Wednesday, said Superintendent of Police Walid Hossain.
Two other members of the committee are additional superintendent of police Subrato Halder and Mathbaria upazila election officer Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman.
Earlier on Tuesday, a group of around 700 people, equipped with local weapons, intercepted the presiding officer in the area at about 8:30pm when, he under the escort of police and Border Guard Bangladesh members was returning to the UNO office from Dhanishapa Degree College centre with election result sheets after the UC polls.
‘The mob tried to swoop on the presiding officer and snatch the result sheets,’ said executive magistrate Kazi Ziaul Baset.
As he tried to resist them, the mob also attacked him, the magistrate added.
Later, magistrate Baset to bring the situation under control ordered the law enforcers to fire gunshots.
Police and BGB members then fired 29 bullets, Baset added.
Three people were killed on the spot and several others injured.
Later, two of the injured succumbed to their injuries at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
