Bagerhat: The death toll from Thursday’s building collapse in Mongla Port area rose to seven as rescuers retrieved one more body from the debris of the collapsed building in the early hours of Friday.

Earlier, six bodies were recovered after the roof of the under-construction cement factory collapsed on Thursday. Fifty people were injured and many others feared got trapped in the building collapse.

Six of the deceased were identified as Amir Akunji, 32, son of Affar Akunji of Gouranma village, Maruf Molla, 40, son of Latif Molla, Ansar Sheikh, 45, son of Dalil Uddin Sheikh of Rajnagar village in Rampal upazila, Alamin, 23, son of Moazzem of Amtala village in Khulna district, Baki Billah, 30, son of Samsur Rahman of Nangoldara village in Kalaroa upaizla of Satkhira district and Sirajul Islam, 35, son of Adam Ali Sheikh of Baintala village in Shyamnagar uapzila of Satkhira district.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Arif Nazmul said the rescuers retrieved the body of an unidentified man from the rubble of the collapsed building early in the morning.

Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat M Jahangir Alam said the roof of the under-construction cement factory of ‘Sena Kalyan Sangstha’ crashed around 1:30pm.

All the six bodies have been kept at Mongla Port Hospital.

The bodies will be hand over to the relatives after completing formalities on Friday.

Meanwhile, the district administration announced to give Tk 20,000 to each family of the deceased for their burial.

Army, firefighters, members of Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and local people rescued 50 injured workers from the rubbles of the collapsed building.

Thirty-five of the injured people were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital and upazila health complexes in Mongla and Rampal.

Acting Chairman of ‘Sena Kalyan Sangstha’ Brigadier General Selim said some 120 workers were working in the factory when the roof of the 40-foot building collapsed.

He said they have formed a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident.

The construction work was going on under the supervision of a Chinese company, he said.
