Dhaka:  Like the first two phases of union council elections, phase three too sees scores of union councils having no BNP chairman candidates.

The Election Commission on Tuesday provided statistics of chairman candidates in 621 union councils of the third phase polls which are scheduled to be held on April 23, reported UNB.

According to the original schedule, 687 union councils are supposed to go to polls in this phase, of which 53 in the Chittagong Hill Tracts areas were deferred on Tuesday to the 6th phase. Another 13 were deferred earlier.

As per the statistics, only ruling Awami League has fielded candidates in the 621 union councils, while BNP in 575 and HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party in 184 union councils.

In the recently held first phase election to 732 union councils, BNP had no chairman contender in some 120 unions. Besides, the party has also no chairman contestant in 79 union councils out of 643 union councils that are set to go to polls on Thursday next.

As per the EC’s statistics, four single candidates are set to be elected uncontested finding no rival candidates against their respective posts in four union councils in the 3rd phase.

The four union councils are two in Louhajang of Munishiganj, and one each in Khoksa of Kushtia and Kaliganj of Jhenidah.

A total of 2817 chairman candidates, comprising 1435 from 14 registered political parties and 1449 independent aspirants, submitted their nomination papers in the 621 union councils within the March 27 deadline, said Director (Public Relations) of the Election Commission Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman on Tuesday.

However, the EC has not compiled list of aspirants for members and reserved seats yet, he said.
