AL activist shot in Jessore polls violence
Jessore: An Awami League activist was shot during a clash between two groups in front of Arpara polling station at Nayapara union council in Sadar upazila in Jessore on Thursday morning.
The injured is Hassan, believed to be in his thirties, a resident of Shahapur area of Jessore.
Local people said followers of two union council member candidates locked in a clash after the balloting began at about 8:00am.
Hassan received bullets on his stomach and chest during the clash.
He was taken to Jessore Sadar Hospital. Doctors said his condition is critical.
The Kotwali police officer-in-charge Ilias Hossain said no clash was reported at the polling centres. Clashes could be taken place in front of the polling station.
Assistant Presiding officer detained
Police held the assistant presiding officer on charges of fake votes at Churamonkathi in Jessore.
Identity of the voting official could not be known immediately.
The Jessore superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman said voting at Churamonkathi government primary school polling centre has been temporarily suspended due to vote fraud.
He said assistant presiding officer of the polling centre was arrested over vote rigging.
