2nd phase UC election sees 76pc turnout
Dhaka: The second phase Union Council election witnessed a 76 percent voter turnout, two percent up from the first phase polls.
As of Friday evening, the Election Commission received complete results of 551 out of total 639 UCs that went to polls on Thursday.
The election results of 46 UCs were not available at the EC Secretariat.
But according to reports reaching the NTV Online news desk, the second phase results in 623 UCs were published. A total of 443 AL candidates, 60 BNP, 4 Jatiya Party, 02 Jasod and 114 independent candidates were elected.
According to the EC’s primary accounts, the voter turnout was 76 percent against the chairman posts in the 551 UCs.
AL chairman candidates were unofficially elected in 372 UCs, while BNP contenders in 58 UCs and independent aspirants in 105 UCs.
With the 33 candidates elected uncontested, the total number of winning AL aspirants stands at 405.
Among other political parties that participated in the election, Jatiya Party (Ershad) chairman candidates won in three UCs while Jatiya Party-JP (Manju) in two.
Besides, polls results of nine UCs remained postponed following suspension of balloting in 33 polling stations.
A total of 7,341,896 (73.42 lakh) out of 9,643,682 (96.44 lakh) votes were cast in the chairman posts in the 551 UCs, which was 76.13 percent of the total votes.
Of the vote cast, 7,191,595 votes were declared valid while 150,301 were cancelled.
AL polled nearly 54 percent of the valid votes, while rival BNP got 18 percent, independent candidates and other political parties bagged the remaining 28 percent.
In the first phase election, AL polled 34 percent of votes cast against the chairman posts, while BNP 10 percent.
AL chairman candidates (including unopposed elected ones) were elected in total 540 UCs in the first phase, while BNP contenders in 47 UCs and independent candidates in 103 UPs. Besides, other political parties won in few UCs.
The third phase election to some 650 UCs will be held on April 23.
