Rape in bus: Police to quiz accused Tangail driver, assistant
Tangail: A court here on Saturday granted police to quiz two transport workers for two days each in connection with the gang rape of a female garment worker in a moving bus in Dhanbari upazila on Friday morning.
Judge Luna Ferdous of judicial magistrate court passed the order after Khan Hasan Mostafa, sub-inspector of Dhanbari Police, and also the investigation officer, produced three accused persons before the court seeking to interrogate them for 5 days.
Police named the accused persons as driver Habibur Rahman and one of his assistants Rezaul Karim Jewel. Meanwhile, another accused, Abdul Khalek Bhutu, confessed his part in the rape to the court, according to a UNB report.
Victim’s husband filed a case accusing nine people on Saturday, said Majibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dhanbari police.
The victim alleged that driver leaders of transport workers’ association offered her husband Tk 1 lakh to hush up the rape incident.
Earlier, the female garment worker was raped in a moving bus allegedly by its driver and his two helpers in Dhanbari upazila Friday early morning.
Police arrested the three prime accused- Habibur, Khalek and Jewel- early Saturday.
Quoting the victim, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan said the woman boarded the bus of ‘Binimoy Paribahan’ from Dhanbari bus stand around 5:30am on Friday while returning to his house in Rakhaliyachara area of Safipur upazila from a relative’s house at Dattabari village of Dhanbari upazila.
As there was no passenger in it, a bus helper sat close to her seat, while the driver drove the bus speedily to an unknown place.
Later, they tied up the woman with his scarf, raped the woman in turns and dropped her at Solakari in Madhupur upazila.
The victim then managed to reach Chandra in Gazipur, where she met her husband and informed him about the incident.
Her husband, who is also a transport worker, took her back to Tangail and informed the matter to the transport association leaders there.
At one stage of his talks with the leaders for setting a date to realise compensation, the victim fell sick and she was later admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
