Accused killed in Lakshmipur ‘gunfight’ with police

Lakshmipur: A man, who was accused in six cases, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Baropol in Sadar upazila of Lakshmipur early on Thursday, said police.
Superintendent of police ASM Mahtab Uddin said a team of Chandraganj Police Station arrested Kawsar from Baropol area on Wednesday.
Later, the law enforcers launched a drive in the area in the dead of night to recover hidden firearms, he said.
Sensing the presence of police, Kawsar’s associates opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
Kawsar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while other members of the gang managed to escape.
Three policemen—sub-inspector Kawsar Chowdhury and constables Ibrahim Hossain and Mohsin were also injured during the gunfight.
Police also recovered one light gun and four rounds of bullet from the spot.
Kawsar is wanted in several cases, including for killing of Awami League leader Faruk Hossain, the SP added.
