Woman ‘tortured to death’ in Panchagarh

Rangpur: A woman was tortured to death allegedly by her husband and mother-in-law in Gofapara village under Sadar upazila in Panchagarh on Friday night, police and local sources said.

The deceased is Maleka Akhter Mala, 21, mother of a seven-month old son and wife of Dulal of Gofapara village.

Police said, Dulal, son of Hussein Ali of Gofapara village married Mala, daughter of Omar Ali of nearby Adhikari Para village three years back after his first wife Nargis Akhter divorced and left him following inhuman torture on her.

Since the marriage, Dulal and his mother Hawa Begum, 50, frequently tortured Mala.

On Friday night, Dulal and his mother inhumanely tortured Mala, seriously injured her by strangling at neck. Neighbours rushed there and took her to Panchagarh Modernised Hospital in critical conditions.

Later, Mala breathed her last on her way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital from Panchagarh Modernised Hospital on Saturday.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot, conducted inquest report and recovered the body this noon.

Police also arrested Dulal and his mother Hawa Begum from their house.

Panchagarh Sadar Police sent the body to Panchagarh Modernised Hospital morgue for conducting autopsy before handing it over to her relatives.

A case was filed with Panchagarh Sadar police station in this connection.
