Indefinite transport strike in Sylhet from Friday

Transport owners and workers on Wednesday announced to go on an indefinite strike in Sylhet district from Friday (15 April) demanding the withdrawal of a case filed against the president of Sylhet Road Transport Workers’ Union.
The union president, Selim Ahmed Folik, came up with the announcement at a rally at Kadamtali in the city in the morning.
Earlier on Tuesday, the union threatened to enforce an indefinite strike in Sylhet district from Thursday if the filling station and petrol pump owners do not withdraw their strike by Wednesday.
However, they deferred the strike by one day due to Pahela Baishakh.
The owners of CNG filling stations and petrol pumps went on an indefinite strike in Sylhet division from Tuesday morning after police refused to take a case in connection with the looting and vandalism of a CNG filling station at Daudpur in South Surma upazila.
They alleged that a group of leaders and activists of Sylhet road transport workers’ union, led by its president Selim Ahmed Folik, carried out the attack on the filling station on Monday afternoon.
As they went to South Surma Police Station for filing a case against some people, including Folik, the police station suggested filing the case excluding the name of Folik, they alleged.
Later, Sylhet division CNG and petrol pump owners’ association president Jubayer Ahmed Chowdhury made the announcement of the strike in the division.
South Surma Police Station officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said the CNG filling station and petrol pump owners did not want to file the case against the attackers but tried to harass others.
