RMCH interns call off work abstention; 30 die in 2 days

Dhaka: Two days after its enforcement, interns at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) called off their work abstention on Sunday afternoon following assurance of meeting their demands.
Director of the state-owned hospital Brigadier General Rafiqul Islam said the interns returned to work at about 2:30pm after the hospital authorities agreed to meet their five-point demand by the next three days.
Earlier in the day, members of Interns’ Parishad, led by its president Al-Amin H Sarker, held a meeting with the director on the campus.
The demands include arrest of the miscreants who carried out an attack on the interns within the next three days and ensuring security of physicians on the hospital premises.
The interns threatened to go on an indefinite work abstention from 21 April if their demands are not met within the next three days.
Meanwhile, at least 30 people died in the hospital from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon during the strike.
Relatives of a Sramik League leader, who died allegedly due to wrong treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, assaulted an intern of the hospital on Friday afternoon.
Later, the interns of the hospital went on the indefinite work abstention protesting the attack.
