Dhaka: The Election Commission has ordered the withdrawal of the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the officers-in-charges of two police stations of Gazipur district ahead of the third phase Union Council polls billed for Saturday.

Separate letters, singed by deputy secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Shamsul Alam, were sent to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the senior secretary of the Home Ministry asking for removing SP M Harun-or-Rashid, Kapasia OC Mir Rakibul Haque and Sreepur OC M Asaduzzaman for the sake of fair polls, Shamsul Alam told UNB.

The Election Commission took the decision after a member candidate, Akter Hossain, was hacked to death by miscreants at Bankoramona village in Proholapur union of Sreepur upazila on Tuesday.
